A new 1% stamp duty land tax surcharge is to be introduced for non-UK resident homebuyers, with the suggested intention being that the revenue raised is used to reduce, and ultimately end rough sleeping in the UK. Late filing penalty letters delayed as HMRC focus on potential no-deal Brexit demands

HMRC have announced that the late filing penalty letters, due to have gone out in February to taxpayers who had failed to complete their online tax returns by the 31st January, have been delayed. Concerned over the potential increase in call centre usage following a post no-deal Brexit, the HMRC have said that the £100 penalty notices may now be sent out as late as April 30, giving taxpayers only 24 hours’ notice of this penalty before potential further penalty charges would apply. The Spring Statement did not herald any major tax announcements, and with the focus on the Brexit vote’s and the 2016 announcement that significant changes would only be made in the Autumn, this was as expected.
